Slavery in Babylonia: From Nabopolassar to Alexander the Great (626–331 BC)

When Rabstvo v vavilonii was first published in the Soviet Union in 1974, it was immediately acclaimed as the definitive scholarly treatment of slavery in the Ancient Orient. Remarkable in its depth and breadth, this book, based directly on the originial cuneiform sources, provided not only an authoritative analysis of the economics of slavery but also a unique picture of Neo-Babylonian society as a whole. An original work of scholarship and synthesis, the book was recognized as an invaluable contribution to the social and economic history of Mesopotamia in the first millennium B.C. The monumental nature of Dandamaev's work is evident from the fact that he utilized approximately 10,000 documents.
